Salcombe Dairy has opened its fifth retail site, located on the stunning beach at Strete Gate, at the far end of the Slapton Line near to Strete village.

Seven days a week, all year round, the team will be serving treats from the shipping container café. On offer will be a selection of award-winning ice creams and sorbets, quality teas, coffees, sandwiches and delicious locally-baked cakes. These will include a number of dairy, gluten, egg and nut free options.

For 46 years, Salcombe Dairy has been proud to produce the finest quality ice cream and sorbets in the factory on Island Street, Salcombe using the best local milk, Devon double cream and 100% natural ingredients. Those same recipes, created in 1979 are still just as loved today and for many visitors, the ice cream represent a key part of cherished holiday memories in Devon. The awards that Salcombe Dairy products receive every year are testament to the dedicated team who innovate continuously to ensure whatever is made in the factory is unquestionably the very best of the bunch.

Pete and the team at Lime Coffee Company have provided a friendly oasis at Strete Gate for dog-walkers, families, hikers and holidaymakers for over ten years. As the Lime beach caravan itself moves on to pastures new, we’d like to reassure the valued and loyal customers that they can expect exactly the same warm welcome and quality food and drink from Salcombe Dairy. The friendly staff at Lime will make perfect additions to the passionate and hard-working team of scoopers and baristas at Salcombe Dairy.

Dan Bly, MD said: “Salcombe Dairy are proud to be an all-year-round employer; in our highly seasonal tourist economy, we think it’s important to support local people and their families with sustainable employment opportunities. We are a family-owned business, and that core value means we look out for each other and nobody in our team gets left behind.”

Located in an AONB, close to the important natural habitats of Slapton Ley, the new off-grid site integrates as seamlessly as possible with the beautiful nature that surrounds it.

The design team have taken measures to ensure a harmonious appearance to the container, with wooden cladding that will mellow and weather with the elements. The South Hams coastline is a huge part of who we are as Salcombe Dairy and thus we want to protect it at all costs and leave lighter footprints on the environment. All our packaging is compostable or reusable and we are striving to reduce our food miles wherever possible by serving exclusively local products. We will also be making every effort to ensure the area surrounding the new beach café is kept litter-free.

The team is so excited to welcome beach lovers to the Salcombe Dairy Beach Café at Strete Gate to enjoy a generous scoop of ice cream, a good cup of coffee and a chat in the glorious sunshine…
