Sustainability Spotlight | Granny Gothards Ice Cream

Granny Gothards Amanda Ringelberg

Artisan ice cream maker, Granny Gothards, is based in the heart of Devon. Surrounded by some of the finest dairy herds in the country, they're perfectly placed to use the freshest Devon milk and cream to create truly exceptional ice cream... which is enjoyed around the world.

We asked owner Amanda Ringelberg how she and her small team creates their ice cream sustainably. It comes down to a simple formula - small-batch production, exceptional ingredients, and ice cream made properly.

The business was founded 14 years ago with a simple but passionate vision - to make ice cream the way it used to be made, using real, natural ingredients and without compromise.

The inspiration behind the brand comes from traditional farmhouse recipes and an unwavering belief that flavour should always come first. What began as a small, hands-on operation has grown into a respected producer supplying both hospitality and retail markets in the UK and internationally.

Behind the brand is a small and dedicated team who share a total commitment to quality, creativity and consistency. Every new flavour is carefully developed, tested and refined to ensure it meets exacting standards before reaching customers. There are 190 flavours available and that's not counting their bespoke flavour service.

From classic Madagascan Vanilla to innovative seasonal creations each product reflects a passion for craftsmanship.

What are your tips for other businesses that want to become more sustainable?

Our advice is to start small, stay practical and build from there. Sustainability doesn’t have to mean radical overnight change; it begins with reviewing your supply chain and asking simple questions: Can we source more locally? Can we reduce packaging? Can we cut waste?

Work closely with suppliers who share your values. Local partnerships not only reduce food miles but often improve quality and traceability. Review utilities such as water and energy usage; small operational efficiencies can make a significant long-term difference.

Be honest and transparent with customers. Consumers value genuine effort over grand claims. Measure what you can, improve what you can, and communicate clearly.

Most importantly, embed sustainability into your culture. When your team understands why it matters, it becomes part of everyday decision-making rather than a separate initiative.

Consistency, not perfection, is what creates lasting impact.
