Sustainability Spotlight | Bollhayes Cider
Bollhayes has been part of the Devon cider landscape for decades, known for producing beautifully balanced, bottle-fermented ciders and Perry. Their approach is simple: respect the fruit, trust the craft, and let time do its work.
They use classic West Country cider apples, long, natural fermentations, and methods that give unmistakable depth and elegance, from dry Devon cider to Champagne Method cider and Perry.
Now, with the addition of the coast-born Wild Coast Cider, they can cater to every taste. From classic, traditional ciders to beautifully crafted carbonated styles, and even sweet, refreshing fruit ciders for the summer they’ve got something for everyone. They’re based in Galpton, near Brixham and you can visit them there, or you’ll find Bollhayes popping up at markets, fairs and events across Devon.
We asked owners Steve and Zoei about their sustainable ethos.
What have you done to make Bollhayes Cider more sustainable?
To help achieve our sustainable objectives we have changed equipment which reduces energy loss.
We use apples grown in our own orchards and from nearby Devon growers, reducing transport emissions and supporting local agriculture.
We optimise cold storage, pressing, and bottling to reduce electricity consumption where possible.
Apple pomace (the leftover fruit pulp) is composted or returned to the orchard as natural fertiliser, improving soil health and reducing the need for synthetic inputs.
What plans do you have for the future?
In the future we would like to bring in a new electric vehicle for our local deliveries to reduce emissions, this is something we see happening in the next year.
The addition of solar panels to our buildings for greener energy is something we would like to do to cut all our emissions by 15% by the end of 2027.
What sustainable tips do you have for other businesses.
Reuse materials wherever possible to make a meaningful contribution to sustainability. Supporting local businesses can also reduce long-distance deliveries and cut vehicle emissions.
