Torview Wines is a small family vineyard, producing primarily red wine, exclusively from their own vines.
Like many vineyards and wineries in Devon they run tours and tastings, but what sets Torview apart is the chance to join one of their Winemaking Days at their vineyard near Sheepwash, north of Dartmoor.
These are ‘hands on’ experience days, where you can make six bottles of you own wine from their grapes.
With a choice of either a Red Winemaking Day (two mornings spread out six months apart), or a Sparkling Rosé Winemaking Day (three mornings spread out over 18 months.)
Tim has now been growing grapes for 16 years on his old sheep farm, looking down towards Dartmoor, in Sheepwash near Hatherleigh.
Having worked for two of the top vineyards in the country (Denbies and Camel Valley), Torview uses a hands-off approach in the vineyard, using weeds to control the vigour of our vines. They’ve combined this with vineyard knowledge from Hawkes Bay, and winemaking experience from UC Davis in California.
They grow four varieties, Pinot Noir, Dornfelder, Rondo and Acolon, as best we can in a sustainable way.
Tours run from Easter to October, to show what they do differently in the vineyard to ripen their grapes. All wine is made on site, and they do a walk-through of the winemaking process. The tour finishes off with a tasting of three Torview wines.
You can often find Torview at local farmers markets, including Appledore, Bradworthy and Hartland.
