A new shop in Bath dedicated to flapjacks has won a coveted Gold at the prestigious Taste of the West Awards, just three months after it opened.

Flapjackery was launched on New Bond Place, in the heart of Bath’s historic back streets, in July. It specialises in hand-made gluten-free chunks of flapjacks made with the finest British ingredients and in an array of flavours such as Cherry Bakewell, Salted Caramel and its award-winning Clotted Cream. It also sells other sweet treats such as fudge, clusters and chocolates.

It’s the sixth gold award Flapjackery has won this year, with its other five premises in Wells, Minehead, Plymouth, St Ives and Tavistock all being awarded the prestigious top award.

Carol Myott, who founded Flapjackery with her business partner Sally Jenkin in 2015 in Tavistock, West Devon, said: “It’s the cherry on the cake for an incredible year. To win gold with all six shops is a brilliant achievement and its hats off to all our wonderful staff who run our shops and take great pride in providing the best customer service they can. It was very exciting to launch our new shop in Bath earlier this year, and it’s been wonderful to have so many people coming in to say hello, and buy flapjacks of course!”

Commenting on Flapjackery Bath, the anonymous Taste of the West judge said: “You automatically get a sense of the pride the business has in its products,” adding “displays of flapjacks and sweet goods as you walked into the store give you the impression of the quality and freshness of the ranges on offer.”

The judge also commended the shop’s friendly staff saying: “The staff were knowledgeable and enthusiastic with regards to the products for sale and about the brand and business – it was most impressive.”

But it was the flapjacks which drew the most praise with the judge concluding: “The sweet buttery notes were fantastic, as you bite into the robust looking bars you instantly get the lovely soft chewy textures of the variety of ingredients – from the consistent oats, butter and sugar which feels like it was cooked for just the right amount of time before allowing to cool and harden to give a satisfying eat, without too much crumbling or falling apart!”

Flapjackery started seven years ago out of Carol and Sally’s mutual love of home baking. They were making cakes for their local farmers market in Tavistock, having both semi-retired and soon realised flapjacks were extremely popular. The delicious sweet treats became their focus and Flapjackery was born. Today the business is thriving with three separate elements – their online shop, six retail outlets and their trade stands which attends shows and events across the UK and they employ more than 40 people.

Producing melt in the mouth products is at the heart of their business, and this year they’ve also scooped an incredible five Taste of the West Gold awards for their products. Its Chocolate Fudge attained gold alongside its Cranberry and Orange Dark Chocolate Clusters, Peanut and Raisin Milk Chocolate Clusters, Chocolate Fudge Flapjack and Summer Fruits Crumble Flapjack adding to the four golds they won in 2021.
