SAFE BEACHES
East Portlemouth is a hidden gem nestling in the South Hams. Here you will find the peace and quiet of a small village surrounded by golden beaches and rolling Devon countryside. The majestic National Trust Coast Path offers a wild and unspoiled coastline boasting stunning shorelines and turquoise waters. Visit our Venus Café located by the ferry steps for alfresco dining and enjoy more hours of sunshine for longer, with south-facing sun-soaked beaches in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs). A quiet location away from the crowds with a lovely atmosphere where you can leave the everyday hustle and bustle behind, it offers a feeling of peace and contentment and is ideal for hiking, cycling, walkers, couples, and families alike.

Spoilt for choice, there are three magnificent sandy beaches made up of Smalls Cove, Mill Bay, and Fisherman’s Cove each with its own unique offering. All three beaches have won ‘Safe Bathing’ status and boast golden sand perfect for making sandcastles; paddling and rock pools to explore at low tide, making it the perfect family day out. Our Venus café has an integrated beach shop selling buckets, spades, and fun beach games to keep the little ones amused and there are public toilets conveniently situated right next to the Café.

FEELING HUNGRY?
Environmentally friendly, and proud to live and work in Devon, we make wonderful homemade dishes lovingly prepared in our own kitchens based in Totnes. All our food is wrapped in sustainable and home-compostable packaging and served with a warm welcome from our friendly staff.

Our East Portlemouth café serves a tasty and nourishing all-day menu. We make amazing wraps daily, perfect for sunny days, including a free-range English Chicken Caesar with Venus’s own homemade dressing. Prawn Marie rose sauce with plump King prawns is always a favourite, popular with our visitors. New for the 2023 season is an authentic Asian-style ‘Bang Bang’ chicken wrap; and make sure you try the delicious Venus falafel and hummus wrap, packed full of flavour.

For those with a sweet tooth, there’s a delightful range of Venus homemade cakes and treats and also hot and cold drinks available including bean coffee (decaf also available). Our mission is to be the greenest café starting with the banning of plastic straws from all of our beach cafes more than 20 years ago. Most packaging is now plastic free and all hot cup drinks & lids are 100% home-compostable to protect the environment and the oceans. For the die-hard tea drinkers, we will donate 5p to RSPB and other worthy causes; for every cup of Venus tea purchased.

A day out on the beach is never complete without a cooling ice cream or ice lolly treat and we have an extensive range and variety available to choose from including all the old favourites as well as new flavours. Brand new to Venus is the plant-based soft Ice cream with no nasties – so extra creamy and smooth!

DOG FRIENDLY
We all love our pets, and our friendly team has always greeted dogs with open arms, meaning both you and your pooch will receive a very warm welcome at each of our South Devon Venus beach cafes.

For 2023 we are excited to announce the launch of our new canine menu developed especially for our much-loved four-legged customers. The range of appetising dog products is a new line for us, meaning your ‘Best Friend’ will feel happy and entertained for longer as part of the enjoyable and nutritional Venus eating-out experience whilst you relax and enjoy an array of food and drinks from our extensive menu.

When dining out, dog owners often give their much-loved pet titbits from their own plates, however, it’s not always good for the dog or their diet. This is one of the reasons why we have introduced a new two-course menu, especially for our discerning canine customers. The special doggie menu offers a main course of three enjoyable chews from The Canine Menu Ltd, followed by Jude’s Dog ice cream as dessert, both bursting with health benefits and no nasties so completely safe for dogs.

Serving 100% natural and appetising dog chews from The Canine Menu with three different chews specific for small, medium, and large dogs, means we can cater to every breed and age. The tasty treats are fully digestible and sustainable, naturally made from by-products of the meat industry. Individually wrapped in fully recyclable packaging, ensuring there is no single-use plastic. This is an important factor for the Venus brand as we fully support sustainability and actively safeguard our beaches and oceans. This is followed by a second course of scrumptious Jude’s Ice cream made with real fruit purées of strawberry, apple, and banana. We have been working with Jude’s for 12 months, however, the Dog ice cream is new for us, and the great news is that 5% of the sales go to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, one of the UK's oldest and best-known animal rescue centres established in 1860. https://www.lovingthebeach.co.uk/food/
