There can be few flavours more evocative of an English summer than the sweet, delicate, floral notes of elderflower. These pretty white flowers blossom on the elder tree for a short time from late May to mid-June. Devon drinks company, Luscombe Drinks ensures you can enjoy the taste all summer long by harvesting the fragrant blooms to create one of their best-sellers, Wild Elderflower Bubbly.

Luscombe founder, Gabriel David, is fastidious about ensuring only the very best blooms go into creating Luscombe’s Wild Elderflower Bubbly – a delightful soft-drink alternative to Champagne. For centuries, people have foraged fields and country lanes to pick elderflowers on hot sunny days in full sunlight once the dew has evaporated. Their flavour is best when the elderflower heads have been warmed and dried by the sun, and when the white flowers are fully opened. It’s the creamy white blooms’ unique flavour that lends itself so well to a refreshing, zingy, lemony drink.

And so, at Luscombe the elderflowers are picked in the Devon sunshine and, before the flavour fades, the blossoms are expertly combined with Dartmoor spring water, organic raw cane sugar and a twist of organic Sicilian lemon juice to craft Luscombe’s award-winning Wild Elderflower Bubbly.

This classically English drink is the perfect choice for celebrations such as weddings, garden parties and picnics; the gentle sparkle in Luscombe’s Wild Elderflower Bubbly lifts the floral notes for an elegant taste which is versatile enough to go equally well with sweet or savoury foods. It’s particularly good served chilled as an aperitif with party nibbles such as smoked salmon canapés and mini quiches or add some frozen berries and a twist of lemon for a refreshing summer punch.

This year the elderflower season will be extra-special at Luscombe. Three years ago, they planted an orchard in what they believe to be the largest Agroforestry method of growing Elderflowers, the practice of growing agricultural and horticultural crops on the same piece of land. This is the first true season the 2,000 elder trees on the 50-acre field run by their friends at the Agroforestry Research Trust on the Dartington Estate in Devon have come of age, and will be offering up a proper crop of flowers.

Wild Elderflower Bubbly is available from in a box of 12x27cl bottles for £20.28 or in a large bottle taster pack (6x74cl) for £21, including free delivery as well as from good independent retailers, farm shops, bars and restaurants.
