In the aftermath of COP26 and rising public concerns over climate change, a Dartmoor food delivery business is offering an eco-friendly alternative for families thinking more of a Green Christmas this year.

Ashburton-based Postal Pantry Company was created during COVID-19 lockdown to meet the need for more sustainably conscious products delivered to the doorstep. From delivering to neighbours in need, Postal Pantry has grown and grown, delivering organic, vegan, gluten free, whole foods and eco-friendly lifestyle products. They deliver in recyclable, plastic-free packaging across South Devon in a zero emissions electric van, as well as offering a postal service to the rest of the UK.

A University of Oxford study showed that by switching to a plant-based diet, individuals can reduce their carbon footprint by up 73%, with vastly reduced fossil fuel emissions from food production. The shift in dietary habits is one that has gathered pace in the last 18 months. According to a recent report by the Vegan Society, 25% of people have actively cut down on the amount of animal products they consume since the first lockdown. People cited health, environmental sustainability and animal welfare as their primary motivations.

With tastes for plant-based foods on the rise, it will likely mean a slightly different look to the festive spreads in millions of households this year.

Clare Brayshaw, one of the founders of Postal Pantry, said “We really want to help make it a little easier for people to shop in a more sustainable way all year round, with our online shop and grocery delivery service.  Having just celebrated our first year in business, we are especially keen this year to help people have a ‘kinder’ Christmas.

“We take a lot of time and effort to carefully select products that are kinder to the environment, whilst not compromising on quality, taste or price. We have put together some gorgeous food and beauty hampers and gifts this year, which along with our huge range of groceries, we hope will help families enjoy their festive feasts in a more environmentally-conscious way.”
